'OMG look
how ugly I look today, I've had a massive breakout and my hair is not doing
anything right....' *insert mildly unattractive picture*
Have you
ever seen anyone post this on a blog, Instagram or Facebook? No, of course not.
Why would anyone post something that made them look bad? Our blogs are a place
for us to sugar coat our lives and make it seem like our lives are full of
rainbows and butterflies and we are so happy we never ever stop smiling (or
staring dramatically into the distance like we do in our outfit posts).
Yep,
that's right. For those of you who haven't realised it yet, social media is a
place where we idealise our lives. No we don't take a picture of the onion
bagel we get every day from the greasy deli, we take a picture of the pretty as
a picture fruit tart we got from the high-end patisserie that one Saturday. And
that's the picture that ends up on our blog. That's just how it works.
The same
thing happens on Instagram. Girls in my grade post pictures of themselves at
parties and with their friends as the rest of the grade sits at home feeling
jealous that they don't go to 'amazing' parties and have 'amazingly close'
friends
I think
most of the time idealism can be fine, actually great in small doses. It
becomes a problem when we forget that social media is quintessentially
idealism, when things get out of perspective it can lead to...well...let's
see....MASSIVE SELF-ESTEEM ISSUES and how is that a good thing at all?
So, in
the spirit of 'keeping it real' (oh my god that sounds so gimmicky), it's
confession time! As I said, I want
my blog to me a true representation of me (ok, maybe a little tiny bit of prettying
up) and I want it to be honest. So I'm going to pull out the embarrassing
honesty card and telling you some (semi) embarrassing things about myself.
Brace yourselves...
-Sometimes I skip showering.
-I can be annoyingly
mainstream, like really mainstream.
-dorkalert*
-I spend too much time alone.
-My hair is more frizzy then a
lion's mane.
If your
feeling honest then confess away in the comments section below, you can even do
it anonymously!
Have a
lovely week,
Isabella
xo
PS.
Speaking of confessions, here's another one. I only have one follower on
twitter and it is my mum (yes, just a tiny bit embarrassing) so could you
pretty please follow me @DearIsabella. I don't smell, honest!

I sometimes skip showering, too. (uh eep, this was embarassing.)
ReplyDeleteAnyways, this is one of the best posts I've ever read. you seem lovely!<3

Haha we should totally make a 'girls who skip showering' club. Thank you for your lovely comment (you seem lovely too) x
DeleteHehe....yes so true! I'm a mom to a two year old, so yep my life is definitely less than glamorous :) Thanks bunches for your sweet comment! xo Marisa
ReplyDeleteCongrats on being a mum! You must be having lots of fun (even if it isn't so glamorous). Thanks for commenting and I love your blog!

I totally agree with you on this one. I follow many many blogs and sometimes they make me feel that my life isn't as "pretty", "perfect", or "fab". But then I remember that, like you said, it is all idealism. I too fall into that because I wouldn't post my worst moments on my blog. So my confession? I guess its that I actually have a lot and lot of pimples. Everyone always says I have great skin, but really its all product of good lighting and makeup!

I'm so happy someone could relate to this post! And don't worry, I'm guilty of adding lots of effects to photos to make my much less than perfect skin a little more perfect. Thanks for commenting,
